David, as a retired CPA, I had many, many folks who over the years tell me that if the tax laws were simpler we accountants would be put out of business. My response always was that, "No, we actually don't like all the complexity and difficulty and we find the work pretty much stultifying, useless and unproductive. If the tax rules were simplified we would simply use our skills helping our clients make more money rather than dying under the tax burden and we would be able to get home on time, unlike now!"

Yes the tax system in particular is unnecessarily complex for very few understandable or explainable reasons.

I started working for my father doing simple T1s in 1972 and they took about 30 minutes each with manual entry and calculations.

This year doing our returns (similar complexity), on a computer required 9.5 hours.

Time to go back to the 70's!
