But there’s a whiff of a self-styled sacred priesthood hanging over the public education sector.” Absolutely brilliant, David. I know a few teachers with that same smug authoritarian attitude. What's that joke? "You can always tell a teacher..... But you can't tell 'em much."
As a US citizen, I did not realize that in Canada, one of the planet’s foremost democracies, that education curriculum research, related analysis and development are a matter of national security requiring such highly classified status that the government will not share the information with its citizens!
But there’s a whiff of a self-styled sacred priesthood hanging over the public education sector.”
I think this statement can apply to all levels of government in canada by default. There is a strong pattern of arrogance and paternalism in all levels of government in this country. This idea that the public only deserves to know what governments want us to know. Its this same pernicious attitude that lets the federal and provincial govts spend $50 billion + in EV subsidies to manufacturers without publishing a detailed business case or even publishing details of the various agreemenrs! Its the same attitude that lets the govt of ontario spend about $1 billion per km in building the ontario line without giving us a public breakdown of where specifically the money will be spent or why this is so expensive.
Ultimately this lack of transparency and openness ends up hurting the citizens while helping line the pockets of corrupt actors.
This isnt a partisan issue. This attitude seems to infect govts of all levels and across the political spectrum. The only way to fix this would be for us, the citizens to tell govts this is unacceptable.
Thank you for these astute comments, and yes, should be spread far and wide. With your permission, I'd like to use your words - close to verbatim - on X / Twitter (for all to see) when contacting MPs / ministers.
