An excellent idea especially if tied to CBC funding. Done correctly this discretionary use of tax dollars would become the sole source of funding for the CBC so that those so concerned with its survival could pay for it leaving those who have no use for it or its ideologies free to see their tax dollars spent on some other program(s) they deemed more worthy.
We do get to vote on spending, rarely, at the local level (eg via referenda), and Vancouver City asks for views on the proposed budget (showing what property tax will look like depending on the options). But under the present Mayor I'm not sure to what extent that will continue (or matter). The party line reigns supreme.
Choosing a school board to support means you get to vote for a trustee for that board. School funding is not tied to this in any way. Or at least that's my understanding.
In keeping with the "ideas that will never be adopted category", how about only allowing net taxpayers to vote (perhaps proportionately by dollar amount). This eliminates the inherent conflict of interest of "public servants" voting for a living that now is double that of the average private sector in wages and benefits. He who pays the piper.....

You're absolutely correct. But it seems funding did follow the designation until 1998. I've updated the post to reflect that.
I've always dreamed of how this could be done - excellent ideas here.

This is a good idea, but should only be instituted AFTER we get some serious reform of our tax system.
